Putumayo Presents : Mexico

Putumayo World Music is pleased to present Mexico, a collection of compelling songs from a country whose musical culture is as diverse as its landscape. From the sones of Veracruz to the boleros of Oaxaca, Mexican music is both upbeat and poignant, and offers listeners a surprising array of traditional and contemporary sounds.

Every year millions of people travel to Mexico, and each brings home a unique experience.

Many head to the tourist resorts and beautiful beaches of Cancun,Acapulco or Puerta Vallarta. Others trek to the highlands of Oaxaca and Chiapas, where for centuries impassable forests have shielded indigenous cultures from total assimilation. Millions more venture into the sprawl of Mexico City, one of the world’s largest urban areas, or wind their way down the Baja coast, enjoying the arid isolation and astonishing vistas of the Pacific. The Mexican landscape varies from dusty desert dotted with cacti to tropical rainforests overflowing with flora and fauna.

The music of Mexico reflects this diversity, with added layers of influences, from the lively beat of German polka to the suave ballads of Cuban bolero. Mexico includes a selection of songs and artists that present familiar elements with unique twists, with new discoveries and perspectives on the beauty and variety of Mexican music.

Mexico features tracks from international stars Los Lobos and Lhasa, regional Mexican superstar Los Bravos del Norte de Ramón Ayala, trova legend Pastor Cervera as well as many discoveries such as La Calaca, Claudia Martínez, Conjunto Jardín, Dueto de Tinito y Porfirio, Lila Downs, Binni Gula’za and Los Hermanos Rios. Mexico includes many rare tracks unavailable outside of Mexico as well as the first song ever composed by Los Lobos, a rousing piece inspired by Mexican folklore.

The liner notes are in English and Spanish and feature detailed information on the songs and artists, beautiful photographs of the Mexican landscape and people, and even a recipe for guacamole.
